Chief Priest

An alternate term for “high priest” in the Hebrew Scriptures. In the Christian Greek Scriptures, the expression “chief priests” evidently denoted the principal men of the priesthood, including any deposed high priests and possibly the heads of the 24 priestly divisions.​—2Ch 26:20; Ezr 7:5; Mt 2:4; Mr 8:31.
